facetime connects and then fails immediately

There is a problem with our Macbook Pro connecting to other apple devices, through facetime.  One instance of this problem is our Macbook Pro trying to connect  via facetime, to one of our iPads.  The iPad is able to dial the macbook pro, and it rings on both sides.  I am able to accept the call and it says connecting, but then it goes to 'facetime failed' almost immediately.  I have tried to toggle off facetime on both devices, reboot them, and toggle facetime back on for both devices, but this did not resolve the issue.  We are on OSX 10.6.8 for the macbook pro.

If anyone has any ideas for potential resolutions, they would be appreciated.

If your macbook is on Snow Leopard OSX then I would imagine the iOS of your iPad is failing because of version incompatibility.  I recommend you would need to update your macbook to the latest OSX and then try Facetime with the iPad.
