Login Redirect To Sub Domain

Hi, i'm in the process of building a login feature on a site.

The customers login at - https://secure.mysite.com - and then i need to redirect them to their dashboard - https://username.mysite.com

I am running into a problem with sessions as i am redirecting the user to a different subdomain after they have logged in.

Should i use a cookie or database session? From what i am reading online, the only real way to do it is to use a cookie?

Can anyone offer any other advice on this? Thanks in advance for your help.
