What tools are used in the programming of experts-exchange?

What programming language?

I like how when I want to edit an existing question, it opens a popup, and then on close it updates that on the screen without any refresh. I know ajax is involved, but are you using any special Q&A type of tool as the base or is it all coded from scratch?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

From what I remember, this is my take:

1) Java platform

2) A good bit of Javascript and AJAX

3) Oracle database

4) I can't comment too much about the tools that are used

I explained in my question what I was wanting to reproduce. I like how when you edit your question, it returns to the page and updates it without refreshing the page. I know that is ajax, but I didn't know if there was a library that I could license that already did all of that. I would like to create a forum that has similar behavior.

I use the telerik controls now that make it easy to use ajax, but just thought I'd ask about libraries or tools used on this site in case it was something I could license for my forums.

It'd broadly described as a content management system (CMS). Of the shelf, forum style applications include WordPress & Joomla.  To code it yourself, you can employ MVC frameworks such as codeignitor, cakePHP and .NET
EE has a full time development team working on all aspects of the site. That means, they've outgrown what any of the applications I've mentioned above would be able to do for them.  They've essentially taken tools such as jQuery and ckeditor and coded the rest from scratch.

I think you already did by using telerik http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/editor/examples/overview/defaultcs.aspx

That takes a simple <textarea></textarea> to something pretty and some built in code for both the front and back end.

At the core, it is not anything more complicated than that.  Because what you are using is most likely custom as Bob points out, what makes the complexity is building in your business rules and any extra features you want to add.  What starts off as seemingly simple, can grow into a monster.

There are forums you can download or buy https://www.phpbb.com/  http://fluxbb.org/ https://www.jitbit.com/asp-net-forum/  https://www.odoo.com/page/community-builder but if you want to offer something special, building your own will be much harder but potentially worth it.
