Hello!
I want to run web server on Ubuntu 14.04 desktop. Do I need SSH at all? I always have direct physical access to the server. No one else is in business.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

SSH is a protocol for connecting to a server.  There are other protocols for connecting to a server.  SSH is useful and secure.  But it isn't mandatory.  If you always have direct physical access to the server, you do not need to use SSH at all.

If you have a need for transferring files, SSH is the basis for SFTP.  SFTP is generally preferred over plain FTP because it is encrypted during transmission.

Most of the time servers are managed remotely and not by sitting at the server itself, in a noisy and freezing server room. To be able to do things remotely and at the same time in a secure way, SSH is needed. Besides that it is usually more comfortable if you can do things from your normal workspace PC, you have a larger display with higher resolutions, you can have more than one SSH connection to the server open so you can view different terminals at the same time side by side and that makes all a lot easier.

Thank you all for your replies!

I don't have any server rooms, my server is here in my living room. I used SFTP before when I was using FileZilla client in Windows environment.
