How do I manage a Enterasys SecureStack C3G124-48P

I bought a Enterasys SecureStack C3G124-48P and wish to configure it (never have worked with managed switches before).  Is there certain software that I need to install on my laptop?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The Extreme/Enterasys product line is easily configured with either a serial connection to the front facing 9 pin serial port and cable that came with the switch or by ssh once the switch has been initially configured.

Jim... I bought this used and only received the switch (no cables or software)

The attached product install manual gives specifics for the switch you listed.

Maybe we can try and get a little more basic...

I boot up my laptop and get to my desktop.  I plug my USB to Serial cable into the laptop and the switch.

Then what?  How do I "log in"?
Sheldon LivingstonConsultantAuthor Commented:

I was attempting to use a USB to serial cable with a gender changer.  It appears that the gender changer was the issue.

I am now able to use my existing USB to (male) serial cable attached to a female to female cable and, with Putty, get a username prompt.

This solution may be helpful to others as it describes what I needed.  A serial cable connection and a piece of software such as Putty to interact with the Switch.
