Crystal Reports - question 2 - from a new user with a Microsoft Office/vba background

Hi EE,

At work, I use Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word with VBA as a report writer/analyst.

The institution is moving to another report writer tool (not Crystal Reports - the one they bought will be be nameless for now... :-)  )

==

Have watched some Crystal reports tutorials on You tube.

Questions, please:

a)When you execute a Crystal report, can you instruct that the report should live in a server location.

b)When you execute a Crystal report, can Crystal send as email attachment.

c) Can you schedule Crystal to run in an automated way?

thx, sandra

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Not sure what you mean.  You can run reports and save the output where you want it.
Crystal can be run using a scheduler that can save instances of the report.

b)When you execute a Crystal report, can Crystal send as email attachment.
Yes, through third-party applications, CR Server, or your own code reports can be emailed as attachments.

 c) Can you schedule Crystal to run in an automated way?
As above  through third-party applications, CR Server, or your own code reports can be scheduled.

Crystal Reports by itself is just a reporting tool and has limited capability beyond being able to develop reports.
For others (non-developers) to use a report requires an application capable of viewing the report.
SAP/Crystal provides 2 such applications, CR Server and Business Objects Enterprise.  There are also numerous viewers and schedulers available from3rd-party vendors.  Ken Hamady has a good list and reviews them each year.

You can also write your own viewing/scheduling application if you wish using the Visual Studio .Net version of Crystal.

Hi mimcc,

On the screen where you specify where you want the report to live, can you make the file:
   a) a .pdf file
   b) I am guessing you can say xls/xlsx here, too?
   c) can you name the file dynamically using parameters that user specified

I will post a new question requesting  a screen shot for:
   a) where you specify the above items
   b) where you specify parameters...

I want to download a trial version of CR for 30 days, so I want to prepare before I dowload....

tx,

sandra

As I stated Crystal by itself cannot do much.  You need an application to do the scheduling, viewing, exporting etc.

You can view and export when you design a report but I wouldn't want to have to run a report when a user wants to see data.

Crystal will export to PDF and to Excel.  The newest versions will do both .xls and .xlsx

Some of the viewers/schedulers will allow you to have a dynamically named file.
