custom search field for mobile - using bootstrap 3

Look at the search functionality in the mobile (I'm using iphone 5) version of this site:

http://www.feedingamerica.org/

I need this exact functionality for my bootstrap (wordpress) site. Any suggestions where to look? I've attached the closed and open versions of the search field.feeding-america-search-closed.pngfeeding-america-search-open.png

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Are you asking how to code this or where to find ready made functionality to do this?

That is part of the bootstrap functionality.  http://getbootstrap.com/getting-started/#examples  If you look at an example that uses a nav, you will see similar functionality built in http://getbootstrap.com/examples/theme/  For more details, look at the navs and navbar http://getbootstrap.com/components/#navbar.

Some wordpress themes have their own customization that will use shortcodes that you use in the comment box that will convert to bootstrap classes.

The search uses collapse http://getbootstrap.com/javascript/#collapse

<a class="btn btn-primary" data-toggle="collapse" href="#collapseExample" aria-expanded="false" aria-controls="collapseExample">
  Link with href
</a>
<button class="btn btn-primary" type="button" data-toggle="collapse" data-target="#collapseExample" aria-expanded="false" aria-controls="collapseExample">
  Button with data-target
</button>

<!-- search -->
<div class="collapse" id="collapseExample">
  <div class="well">

  </div>
</div>

Open in new window

In the above example you give the div containing the search the class "collapse" and give it a unique id.  The example above <div class="collapse" id="collapseExample"> Finally your element that gets clicked gets two attribute for collapse and the target.  data-toggle="collapse" data-target="#collapseExample"

Hi,

You may like this one, it is different but this could do the job.
Check the third one

lenamtl - I really like this one! my client doesn't want the search in the drop down though on mobile. they just want it next to the pancake menu (not in it)  - is that possible?

Thanks lenamtl - I still like your first example the best:

http://bootsnipp.com/snippets/featured/toggle-navbar-with-slide-down-animation

Hoping there is a way to keep it next to the pancake menu on mobile instead of having it collapse into the nav

This is possible
Use this one http://bootsnipp.com/snippets/featured/toggle-navbar-with-slide-down-animation
as default
and use this search in small view only
http://www.bootply.com/render/VJW5mTuTEf

For example you can use it with this part of the code

<!-- Search phone-only -->
      <form class="navbar-form navbar-left visible-xs" role="search">
        <div class="form-group">
          <input type="text" class="form-control" placeholder="Search">
        </div>
        <button type="submit" class="btn btn-default">Submit</button>
      </form>
