how to search inside notepads (win7)

F3 only picks up text of file, but not content inside the file.. do we have to resort to 3rd party tools for this?

Searching contents should always work for indexed locations, so maybe your Notepad files are not in indexed locations. If so, do this:

Control Panel
Folder Options
Search
Tick the Always search file names and contents box:

Search contents
That will allow searching on the contents for even the non-indexed locations. Regards, Joe

No. Also works in Home Premium (but I don't know about Starter).

> do i need a reboot?

I don't know. But when in doubt, reboot. :)

thanks.. it worked now. appreciate that.

now how would search for a phrase in a notepad.. and c drive is big.. so i put the word, and it is spinning for a long time (on C: drive).. if I put the search in a small folder within C drive, it pulls it fast.)

in F3, can you tell it to search only text files but with a phrase word?

You're welcome. I'm glad that works for you.

> now how would search for a phrase in a notepad

Just enter the whole phrase.

> so i put the word, and it is spinning for a long time (on C: drive)

Makes sense if the C drive is big.

> if I put the search in a small folder within C drive, it pulls it fast.

Also makes sense!

> in F3, can you tell it to search only text files but with a phrase word?

Left click in the Search box and it will give you some Search Filters:

search filters
One of the filters is Type (meaning file type). Select .txt and it will search only .txt files:

search filter file type txt
This should speed up the search significantly. Regards, Joe
