What is E16 Backplane vs E26 Backplane and how its implemented?

What is E16 Backplane vs E26 Backplane and how its implemented?
I know that the E16 had one expander daugther card and E26 had two expander daughter cards but unsure how they work.

Pretty sure it's just a secondary connection, for multipathing. So the controller isn't a single point of failure. When you do this you have to have sas, not Sata disks as Sata doesn't support multipathing controllers.
