VssSyncStart Operation Failed: Access is Denied

Experts Exchange,

I have been having VMware 5.5.0 Snapshot errors using Netbackup 7.6.0.3.  NetBackup job error 156. Failed to quiesce the virtual machine. All local drives is not frozen.  vSphere Client server event reports, warning message from esx host: The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 5 The error message was: "VssSyncStart' operation failed: Access is Denied. (0x80070005). vpxuser

This is happening to random Windows 2008R2 Servers.

Any help with solving this will be greatly appreciated!

V/R,
James

If you manually Take a snapshot with the quiesce option ticked, do you get the same error, e.g. can you reproduce it?

Hi Andrew.  Thank you for replying. I can take a manual vSphere snapshot with the quiesce option and the virtual machine's memory ticketed however when I initiate the backup job from NetBackup, I get the same 156 error.

this works - okay ?

can you do this without the memory option ticked, do you get an error ?
Thanks for the suggestions. I am getting some weird errors in vSphere. If I uncheck the "Snapshot the virtual machine's memory" and check the "Quiesce guest file system" the snapshot fails with the following error.

Warning message from esx host: The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 5 The error message was: "VssSyncStart' operation failed: Access is Denied. (0x80070005). vpxuser

If I check both options, the snapshot succeeds.
Okay, this was what I wanted to see you report.

there would appear to be a fault in the VM, with the VSS Writers.

I would remove and re-install VMware tools. (this will require several reboots) of the VM.
Thanks for the info.  Uninstalling and Reinstalling VMware Tools does not fix the issue however When I deselect VSS when installing the VMware Tools, the backups will work.  We are still troubleshooting why the backups sporadically fail when it was successfully working the previous day.
