Switch un-managed question

Hi Experts,

I am looking for a few questions answered with regards to setting up a un-managed switch.

can you have as many 'in' connections as you want?

if I had a 16 port switch and 12 ports connected to PC's and the remaining 4 were connected to my router, would this provide a better speed then only having 1 connecting going in?

would it work as in : 1 'in' for 3 'out'?

or do switches not work like this??

I would say you would need a managed switch that was capable of Ether-Channel or Link Aggregation Control Protocol. An unmanaged switch I doubt would provide these advanced features.

Having more connections to a router won't really improve anything.

In an ideal situation, you would have a gigabit router connected to a gigabit switch....in case you need to know, gigabit = 10\100\1000. This would provide a gigabit "backbone" on your network. Then as long as your computers have gigabit NIC cards they would be able to communicate at the higher speed.

I have 4 ports in a room and about 12 PC's that need to use it, the cabling is coming from a gigabit router so is what your saying I would better off putting 1 connection in and splitting it into the 12? or should I take all 4 connections and split that into 12?

The router typically just has one connection (the inside interface)  and plugs into one port on the switch. I'm not sure why there would be 4 ports for the router...the cabling from the gigabit router - is each one labeled? I'm beginning to think you should just be using one connection not other ones from the router - therefore do not use the other two connections on the far left of your diagram - just use one of the 3.

maybe I am confusing myself.

basically we have 4 patch ports on the wall. we have ran out of patch ports in that room and therefore without re-wiring the building I wanted to take 1 of these ports and plug in a switch. I then wanted all the PC's in that room to run on this switch.

but then I thought if I took all 4 connections from the wall and plugged that into the switch would I get more bandwidth, more speed and a better connection.

You only need one of the connections and put a switch in the room and run a cable from the switch to each PC
