SBS 2011 Performance issues Exchange Quarrantined mailbox

I have a customer with an SBS 2011 server running Exchange 2010, he is having mailboxes quarantined and I suspect possible server performance issues, threads taking too long. It is a small Fujitsu server with 16Gb RAM with a pair of mirrored hard drives. This means that the tmp and temp folders are on the same drive as the operating system.

Question, is it OK to add an EXternal USB hard drive and make the paths to the temp folders on the external drive to see if it helps?
Or would that not work?

You cannot use external USB drive to keep Exchange database. So answer is no.

Amit I don't want to put exchange on the external drive, I have been told that having the temp folder on the same drive compromises performance so I was going to use the USB for the TEMP files
temp files means? What you are trying to move to usb drive. Remember USB drives are not designed to be used on server. It is just to store data.
