I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If what you want won't install and run, then you need to get a computer that will run your software. That would be my advice.

You can use the programs built into Google Drive for word processing and spreadsheets (called docs and sheets). They are not as fully featured as Microsoft Office but work just fine for basic stuff. You do have to watch the formatting if you export the file you are working on to a .doc file, as it may change a bit.

As far as internet goes you just connect to wifi and use the Chrome which is built into the OS.

It is also possible to use an online version of the Microsoft office suite from your Microsoft account page (login at outlook.com). These aren't full featured versions either, and you have to have an internet connection to use them, but you would avoid any formatting/compatibility issues.

Google docs are not a perfect match for Office. And you really need good internet access for Google docs.

Probably your best approach is a Windows computer.

You can use Google Docs offline here is an article that explains how. Essentially it is installed as an app in chrome. It doesn't solve any of the formatting issues you get but it does allow you to use it when your internet connection isn't consistent.
