Lenovo Helix with windows 8.1 will not power external monitors without a restart

A client has a Lenovo Hexlix with Windows 8.1 http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/tablets/thinkpad/thinkpad-helix/ with attached is a dock, ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock (0A33970) with two external monitors.

In the morning, when the computer is plugged into the dock, the external monitors will not engage.  You have to restart in order for the external monitors to kick in.  If I remember correctly,  I can unplug the dock from the computer, wait a short time and plug the dock back to the computer and it works.  It is after the computer has been off the dock for the night and trying to start in the morning.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Can you try with just one monitor and see if it works. One monitor should work fine from startup. Please confirm.

Look at this Lenovo thread as you may need a special adapter. I am not certain. Please let us know about one monitor.

I will have him try with one monitor tomorrow.  What does happen if the computer is restarted, one monitor (out of the 3 - 2 external plus the helix) has a start up screen that gets clicked which then turns to the log in screen.  Once logged in, you can go back to dragging the mouse across all 3 screens.

The main issue is  after the laptop has been used off the dock then gets plugged into the dock without being restarted, the external monitors do not kick in.

This morning I did try and turn on monitor off, but it was still plugged into the dock.  I think it would be a better test to physically unplug the monitor from the dock.

I tried this morning with only one monitor and no go.  The computer didn't recognize any connected monitors.  Once I restarted it, I am able to unplug from the dock, then plug it back to the dock and it works.  There must be something about the computer being in sleep mode?

1. I am not sure the Helix can manage this.
2. What about this comment in the thread above  (page 2)?
I have the USB 3.0 Thinkpad dock, and then i have the monoprice 8119 driving out the display port.
3. Can you update BIOS, Chipset, and PM device?

Thanks for trying.

I will look into that friday afternoon.  I'm almost tempted to just have him go back to the desktop for the office and use the helix for out of the office.  Everything is done on google drive anyway so there is not much need to have to work with just one computer since very little is being saved.

If the only solution ends up to restart every morning, this computer takes an awfully long time to reboot. I was surprised because the hard drive is ssd.

One thing you can try is DISM. This is a fairly heavy duty Windows 8 Repair tool. That might assist here.

Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth (takes 15 - 20 minutes).
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth (takes 15 - 20 minutes).
Restart the computer and test.
