RAID 1+0 Array, 2TB Volume, Increase size / space

We are running RAID 1+0 using an Areca AR-1680 controller and 5 1TB Western Digital drives for an array volume of 2TB. More space is needed, so we are wanting to individually switch the 1TB drives with 2B or 3TB devices to make an array volume of 4TB or 6TB.

Is this possible? Or would it be necessary to copy off the data, rebuild the entire array and restore?

It is an NFS Sever running Ubuntu and contains primarily backup images, but a portion is also utilized as secondary production storage (mapped Windows data drive) for a VMWare server.

That (swapping drives one by one and rebuilding after each swap) won't work.   You need to do a full bare-metal-restore backup.  Then blow the RAID away, and replace with new drives, then restore.   The commercial backup packages will automatically resize the partition.

NOTE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BOOT A LOGICAL DRIVE > 2 TB UNLESS YOUR PC HAS UEFI AND YOUR CONTROLLER SUPPORTS BOOTING UEFI FOR YOUR O/S!!!

Thanks much for the reply. I figured this was likely the case but was hoping otherwise.

Both the SuperMicro chassis and Areca controller card are somewhere between 3-5yr old. I am thinking chances are low that UEFI is supported. Logical assumption?  I would likely need update the Ubuntu OS, controller card drivers & firmware.

If I can confirm or otherwise establish UEFI boot support, then would it better to stick with a RAID 1+0 configuration for the benefit of striping for the entire 4TB or 6TB array volume?

In doing some digging around on Areca and "expanding array", I came across this - http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1356904&page=2

Is this possible because the volume is RAID 5 instead of RAID 1+0?
The question was asked and answered.  The RAID5 just will NOT work for you because you will go over the 2TB limit for the boot drive.
