Remote Desktop stops connecting to Windows 8.1 workstaton after a while

This issue has been going on for several months. We are running a domain network on a SBS 2011. The workstation in question is running Windows 8.1 pro with all Microsoft updates installed.
After booting up the workstation we are able to remote into it for about an hour. Then RDP is unable to connect, connection fails before we are prompted for user credentials.
Remote access is enable.
Windows firewall is allowing remote desktop connection.
Symantec endpoint protection has been removed.

are you trying to RDP from the internal network or from an external source?
If external, test it from the internal network to confirm if the PC is actually at fault.

Check if any services have stopped and check the event viewer around the time it stops working as this should give you a good direction to start with.

Otherwise, check for any scheduled tasks or group policy updates, as the fact this occurs after a specific amount of time may give you a clue what could be causing it.
