How to receive faxes on computer

We currently use a subscription service to receive faxes. We are wanting to change that and start receiving faxes on a computer.  What is a typical setup to use? I assume we would need a fax card. Is it as simple as just buying a fax card, install it and hook to a phone line and we are good to go?  Are there other ways to receive a fax into the computer where a phone number is actually dialing us up over an internet connection?

If fax card and phone line, can you suggest a card to use?  Is there software that gives a heads up if/when there are problems like faxes not coming through?  We had a basic card in a machine a while back, but there was no way to know when it wasn't working until a customer/vendor called to let us know faxes were failing.

If there are other methods like receiving via internet connection, what would we need?

Interesting. We have HP LaserJet Professional M1530 MFP on the network.  Will that one work like you are talking about?  I looked at the user manual, but wasn't sure what to look for.
