Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Does it have to be iCloud? You could create a google account, download their Drive application, and make use of their free 25gb

To set up iCloud go to Settings > iCloud. There you log into your apple account. In this same screen you can select which apps you want to have backed up (mail, contacts, notes, photos, docs, etc.) Under that, click the "Storage & Backup" row to see how much storage you have. You can also buy more storage on this screen too.
iCloud gives you only 5GB of storage to start. I find this fills up very fast, and its not worth the money to buy more when there are so many other options out there. For 20GB its $0.99/month, and  you can store up to a terabyte for $19.99/month.

An alternative you can also use is Dropbox:
This will automatically backup photos and videos. Dropbox can be accessed from any device at any time, and you can even share folders with your friends/family.

If you are looking for free backup options other than iCloud, I would definitely suggest going with Google Drive or Dropbox.
