I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The Windows failover cluster can only support a maximum of 16 nodes. This limitation kind of flows into DAG. So, though a DAG can only have a maximum of 16 servers, the limit actually comes from the Windows failover cluster.

As far as, I know, it is true till 2008, you have 16 node limit. Which is now increase to 64 nodes in 2012.

I don't think Microsoft want to increase more than 16 node for DAG, though fail-over cluster limitation is increased in 2012. Another way to have more nodes, you can create new DAG. Having multiple DAG is the one more way to achieve your requirement.
