I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Searching inside Word and Excel (plus Text) at the content level is EASY with Windows Indexing and Search.

For searchable PDF (not all PDF files are searchable), I use the FoxIt iFilter. It integrates with content searching and that works as well.

I use FileSeek from www.fileseek.ca

It searches inside files using the appropriate file handlers.

It is fast and has many powerful options such as date filters, file size filters, exclusions.

On OSX the one of the best free programs for searching file contents is called EasyFind ... http://www.devontechnologies.com/products/freeware.html

If can search your entire HD for by filename or by file contents in any type of readable file.

The "Path(s):" field needs to be set to the top path of where ;you want to search. Easiest way is to right click on the path in Windows Explorer and select "Search with FileSeek".
In "Include Files:" put "*.pdf|*.doc*". This will search pdf's, doc's and docx's. That is a vertical bar between them.
In Query put "the dog is big". Do not type the quotes anywhere. I have put them to make it clear.
Under the advanced tab tick "search sub-folders" and "Process file contents using File Handlers" and "Show file names that match the include files filter".
The program will remember your settings next time.
