1. Open SQL Server Configuration Manager & verify whether the SQL Server service is in running state.
2. If your SQL Serve instance is not configured with the default port 1433, then mention the port along with the server name e.g. <ServerName\SQLInstanceNam e, PortNumber>
3. Also check, whether the port used by SQL Service are allowed in the firewall.

Yes trying to connect to local SQL Server instance from SSMS (management studio).

Are you running the SQL Server on your local computer or on a Server?
