i would suggest using a GUI, i can tell you will need to use this.

register the product and get hold of Cisco Networking Assistant or whatever other switch management software is listed for this device.

yes it will have a default running config for a switch out of the box with no vlans etc.

you can manage this by CLI using putty too. that is a free application.

if it is a brand new device i think you need to use a console port to connect to you computer to configure an ip for your device and as Mark state u can use putty to configure the ip for the device. Then you can choose to use GUI if available to do basic configuration. or CLI

dont use cli, these switches are tricky to configure if your not experienced with citrix cli and terminology.

there is always a gui for cisco devices, i suggest using it, you also probably have setup support on this device.

anyway you need to register the device with cisco website and look at the downloads section in relation to it, firmware the switch too before you put it in or test it.

It  must be done much more than that.
In order to use any of GUI for Cisco you must run start http (https) server on router aside of add ip address to SVI. Add username and password for level 15 user account etc .. that's on second link...

Device comes with
Cisco Configuration Professional Express
on flash (at leash it should - I know mine did) otherwise you can download it and copy it to flash.
