Setting up secondary Active Directory to move from 2003 SBS to 2012 R2

i have AD on a SBS 2003 and am creating a new 2012 R2 Server to replace this old server.  What is best practices to setting up a secondary AD to get all the data from 2003 AD server? My servers are VM and I want to move the 2003 Hard Drives to the new 2012 server too because all the users home drives are on these and are referenced in the AD.

Thank you

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Your 2012 servers should be in the same AD domain as the SBS 2003 server.  Then designate one of the new servers as a DC and replicate all your user accounts.  Same for DNS, DHCP, WINS, and Global Catalog server.
Then move your data to new location on new server, then transfer the FSMO roles and decommission the SBS server
That's a very high level overview

Don't create a new domain.  SBS wont do trusts
Moving the drives from the SBS server won't make the clients seem them automatically.

I used this step by step guide a few months ago and then make sure domain controller is not the ONLY Global Catalogue

If domain controller currently holds one or more operations master roles, transfer the operations master roles to another domain controller before demoting it
