"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

When you move mailboxes from Older versions of Exchange to Exchange 2013 it uses the MRS Service (Mailbox Replicaiton Service) which moves mailboxes to the new Exchange 2013 database. This is an online move because the MRS Service is used to move the mailbox on the Exchange sever. This was introduced in Exchange 2010.

In previous verisons of Exchange, like 2007 it uses Powershell to move the mailbox which connects directly to the mailbox which does not allow the user to use Outlook or OWA during the move process.

So when you are migrating mailboxes it is an Online Move with Exchange 2013. Once the mailbox has been moved, the user will need to restart Outlook.
