Android - Google Hangouts / Google Messenger

So I normally use Hangouts, but recently had a need to send a group message (I normally don't send group texts but that's also probably because I never found a way to do it from Hangouts...)

So anyway I did some research and found for group MMS I need to use Google Messenger.

So now I have both installed, and of course each message I receive now comes in duplicate, one to each app.

Do I still need to keep Hangouts installed for any reason? I don't even know why there is both Hangouts and Messenger they both seem to do pretty much the same thing (well except I can only create a group message from messenger)

Google Hangouts is useful for video and voice messaging/calling. It also doubles as a "text" message.

You can accomplish group MMS with Google Hangouts -- To activate, go into your Google Hangouts App, and click the top left icon to bring up a menu, and click Settings. From there, click on SMS. Then, at the bottom, under advanced, you will see Group messaging. Here, you can use MMS to send to multiple people.

If it is grayed out, that means Google Hangouts is not your default messaging app. Click on SMS under general to switch to Google Hangouts as your default messaging App.

Once you have this set up, I don't see the use for Google Messenger.

I have SMS enabled in Hangouts, including the group MMS option.

I see now when I search for someone and click the SMS next to their phone# I do get an "anyone else?" question at the top..

But I'm in the one-on-one I've been having with this person, who I chat with often so I don't want to add people to THIS hangout.

I want to create a new hangout with the 3 people.

Is that possible?

Go into hangouts. Click the + sign (top right). Select the first person you want to have in the group. Then, "anyone else" will pop up in the contact box, and click that. From there, continue to add the other 2 people. Once you are done, type in your message and hit send.
