Starting to use Hyper-V - Server 2012 / Server 2008R2

Hey All,

We are looking into using Hyper V and have a small client to test this on. Am i right in thinking we install Server 2012R2 Standard onto a physical server then use the Hyper V Manager to install for example... Server 2008R2 Standard and can make that the domain controller, then install a separate 2008R2 in the Hyper-V Manager for exchange etc?

Or is there some Hyper-V boot installer we can install on the physical server without having to use Server 2012 on the physical server?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If you have spare machines/licenses you can also use the Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 to host your your 2008R2 auxiliary domain controller /Exchange ....and  whatever else you want to test and use the 2012R2 server as your main Domain controller...
You can install Hyper-V core as the base. That will give you no GUI. You can manage the server via a PC using Windows 8.x with the Hyper-V Management tools feature remotely, or via powershell.

For small installations, you can use the 5Nine Hyper-V Manager on the Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.  It will make management FAR easier.

The Windows Server Hyper-V manager in 2008 / 2008 R2 CANNOT manage a 2012 / 2012 R2 server.  You CAN use Windows 8's but not Windows 7.

We have a set of PowerShell scripts that make installing a Hyper-V host a minutes affair instead of hours.

I have an EE article here: Some Hyper-V Hardware and Software Best Practices. Please check it out.

It's as simple as installing the OS, then the role, configuring a virtual switch (preferably on a NIC team), configuring the virtual hard disk and configuration files destination (preferably a second partition to the OS install), and setting up your VM(s).

I suggest 2012 R2 and Exchange 2013 if they are licensed for it.

What would be the scenario if had to restore the local / virtual server ? Could you explain how we would go about this please?
Philip ElderTechnical Architect - HA/Compute/StorageCommented:
We keep a bootable USB flash drive with the copied from ISO OS setup files on it. We boot from iDRAC Enterprise, iLO Advanced, or Intel RMM and format, re-install the OS, drivers, and set up Hyper-V.

The VMs would then be imported using the Import Wizard in Hyper-V Management after running the required updates in the host OS.
