Can't install new R9 270x Radeon GPU

Hi I have a Win7 64 bit with 600w power supply. My old Radeon card died, so I used an old nVidia card until I bought the new R9 270X card. I didn't install any drivers with the nVidia card.

When I inserted new GPU the system recognized it and I started to install drivers from the CD and the system froze up. A reboot does not show any video display. If I pull the CMOS battery it will see the card again. I've run a couple driver removal apps including the AMD one, and also deleted the C:\AMD directory. When I run the Auto Detect utility it recognizes the old Radeon card. If I try to run the downloaded driver installer it gives "Failed to load detection driver".

Any ideas?

Updated your motherboard BIOS
Trevor LocalAuthor Commented:
I have the latest BIOS.

It seems I can restart now and the BIOS sees the card.

I booted into Safe Mode and ran the AutoDetect utility. It sees my card as Radeon HD 8XXX series, and I figured this was a compatible device driver.... so I let it download and started the install. I chose custom install, and as soon as it started to install it gives "Failed to load detection driver".

I installed Driver Fusion and deleted the drivers for AMD and nVidia (in Safe Mode). Then I rebooted into Win7 and was able to run the installer successfully.

No luck. Windows freezes when doing anything remotely connected to video, like opening Explorer with a folder with freezes when rendering the icons.

I think I will return this card and try something else.

Can you try this GPU on new windows

you can test the card when running from a live knoppix cd  :

or install another OS + drivers on another Partition or disk drive (best solution) to test the card

but it looks like your hardware could have other problems..
