Consolidating VCenter Essential hosts & VM into vSphere Enterprise Editon running VCenter 5 Standard ?

Hi People,

I’d like to know if it is possible to get the cheapest license possible for the ESXi servers to be managed by the VCenter server standard edition ?

It is to be used by the 2x ESXi hosts that runs CISCO PABX virtual appliance VMs, at the moment it is running on under vSphere Essential Edition.

My goal is to consolidate the ESXi hosts and reduce the licensing cost under single Vcenter server as opposed managing multiple VCenter server.

Thanks.

The cheapest entry level is VMware vSphere Essentials at approx $700, which includes licenses for 3 x 2 CPU Host Servers and vCenter Server.

But what VMware vSphere features do you require, do the features in VMware vSphere Essentials satisfy your requirements ?

Do you need vCenter Server to manage your two hosts ? or could you use FREE ESXi ?

Hi Andrew,

There is VCenter Server 5.1U1 standard Edition managing 14 others ESXi Servers (HP Blades) with vSPhere Enterprise Plus license.

My goal is to join the existing 2x HP Blades which is running as Essential and managed by the VCenter 5 Essential edition.

I do not need the vSMotion or the HA since there is only 2x ESXi nodes, so just basically runs the Cisco VM appliance.

So can I join the above 2x ESXi hosts on Essential to the VCenter standard edition as 2x stand DRS cluster?

So you will have two ESXi servers with Essentials License?

and you want them to be managed by vCenter Server standard ?

If this is the case, you may not be able to manage them or add them to vSphere vCenter Server, because Hosts that are licensed with vSphere 5.х Essentials can only be managed by vCenter Server systems that are licensed with vCenter Server 5.х Essentials. For example, if you try to add a host that is licensed with vSphere 5.х Essentials to a vCenter Server system that is licensed with vCenter Server 5.х Standard, the operation fails. vCenter Server 5.х Standard does not support vSphere 5.х Essentials.
