empty an array using [ ]

Hi there,

Assuming, I have an array myList and want to empty it at some point.  It was suggested I can do
myList = [];
But it was also mentioned that if I ave another 'reference' to myList then I may leak memory.  How can I have another 'reference' to myList?  Can someone give an example.  Thanks.

How can I have another 'reference' to myList?

If you had another variable using the array. So for example:
myList = [1,2,3,4,5];          //A - initialise your list
anotherList = myList; //B - assign this value to another var. creating a 2nd reference to the array
myList = []; //C - we make myList point to another NEW, but empty array

Open in new window

On B ... the memory space our array [1,..,5] now has two variables pointing to it.
On C ... we are not clearing that other memory space. we are creating a new empty array, anotherList still points to the [1,2,3,4,5] array.
