My Samsung external dvd drive works fine when powered by a regular laptop USB port, but shows for a few seconds, then disappears on my Microsoft Surface.<br />

I assume the Microsoft Surface USB port does not supply enough power, therefore I need to get an external dvd drive Y-cable/etc to provide the power ?
