Microsoft Surface -- external dvd drive failure

finance_teacher used Ask the Experts™
My Samsung external dvd drive works fine when powered by a regular laptop USB port, but shows for a few seconds, then disappears on my Microsoft Surface.

I assume the Microsoft Surface USB port does not supply enough power, therefore I need to get an external dvd drive Y-cable/etc to provide the power ?

You could probably use a powered hub instead.  Or you can make an ISO of the DVD and then copy it the surface, mount it with Windows, and install from there.  (Assuming software install is your purpose).
