"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

in openmanage, when you look at physical disks, the extra drive(s) that are not part of the array, there is a drop down list and in there select 'assign global hot spare'

You assign Global in Storage, PERC, Connector/Backplane, Physical Disks.
You assign Dedicated in Storage, PERC, Virtual Disks and assign it to a VD to protect.
Disk must be in Ready state. If Foreign, you MUST CLEAR it before you can assign it as a hot-spare.
