Create a Recovery Pen Drive Win8.1

Hi,

How can create a media usb drive to install windows 8.1 on a pc that crash disk and had to install a new drive. I downloaded the Mediacreationtool from Microsoft website,  and created a pen with the operating system. Before the disk fails took windows key.
But after boot from pen drive with win 8.1 and starting install, setup ask me windows key. After put windows key setup tell me key is not valid.
For pre installed windows 8.1 (and when disk crashes) where can find windows?

You can try the following web address to get the Windows 8.1 installer:

http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/windows-8-1-download-iso-32-64-bit-free-official/

Is the key you're using for that specific computer?  If it's not for that computer, then it may not work.  Manufacturers like HP and Dell use security software to ensure that a PC's install key will only work on that PC itself and no other.

The product key is embedded in the PC's BIOS. You don't need to enter it manually. The version of Windows you are installing must match the version of Windows that was originally installed. If you have downloaded the wrong version of Windows it won't activate. Maybe you should order a recovery stick from your PC's manufacturer. That should work

did your PC come with windows 8.1 ?  or did you upgrade, or install it  yourself?

If a key doesn't work, you can always use the keys from this article https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612867.aspx? and after installing, exchange the key for yours, that works.

Your key for "with bing" edition does not work with the downloads from mediacreationtool, I am afraid.
Best would be to make an image file of your hard drive in regular intervals.
If the hdd crashes, insert a new one, restore the image - done.

Order the recovery media from the PC manufacturer.

If you had created the stick when you got the PC in the first place when it was running, as you should have done, you could have used that stick. But since you didn't do so, it is the best option.

Normally when you get a new PC, you create your own recovery stick as one of the first tasks. Just get a USB stick that is slightly larger than the PC's recovery partition. Then open the Control Panel of Windows, select "Recovery", then "Create a recovery drive", and then make sure you have selected the "Copy Recovery Partition to the recovery drive". That will create a USB stick which is bootable and that can repair startup issues, and it can also be used to restore the PC to a factory state if the disk has to be replaced. This stick should then be locked away safely and only used when needed, or when res-selling a PC. Some manufacturer's may have their own tool included to create a similar stick.

Ordering recovery media from the manufacturer is usually not expensive. It certainly is less expensive than buying a new Windows License.

I have no idea why it "fails at 30%" but when it does, create an image, it's just as good.

that can point to a disk problem - that's probably why you try the recovery ?
in such cases, test the disk; i use UBCD for that a lot :

Hardware diagnostic CD    UBCD

go to the download page, scroll down to the mirror section, and  click on a mirror to start the download
Download the UBCD and make the cd   <<==on a WORKING PC, and boot the problem PC from it
Here 2 links, one to the general site, and a direct link to the download

since the downloaded file is an ISO file, eg ubcd527.iso - so you need to use an ISO burning tool
if you don't have that software, install cdburnerXP : http://cdburnerxp.se/

If you want also the Ram tested - run memtest86+ at least 1 full pass,  - you should have NO errors!

For disk Diagnostics run the disk diag for your disk brand (eg seagate diag for seagate drive)  from the HDD section -  long or advanced diag !  (runs at least for30 minutes)

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html             download page

**  you can make a bootable cd - or bootable usb stick
