I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If you want the hosts file to be resolved the hostname then you have to remove #  symbol infront of the ip address

example

47.21.55.154      Woodburyabby

If you would like to have the fully qualified name then you set the host file like below

47.21.55.154      Woodburyabby.domain.com

Thanks

I use 1.2.3.4  server  # Description of the server or host.

Descriptions help make sense of the lines a year later when you look at them.

For sure (as noted above) do not comment out the lines with a leading #.

@intelogent,

If you want the hostname to be resolved by the hosts file then you need to delete # symbol infront of the ip address,

47.21.55.154      Woodburyabby

If you dont want the hostname to be resolved by the hosts file, then put # symbol infront of the ip address

#47.21.55.154      Woodburyabby

When a line begins with "# ", the whole line is treated as just a comment. In addition to putting explanations into the file, you can activate and deactivate lines by removing or adding "# " at the start. That allows you to make temporary changes without losing the data on the lines.
