Linking to Report Server Shared Data Source

Hi guys,

As the title suggests, I have created a shared data source on the report server . Is it possible to link to this data source on a report I have created on my local machine? If so how is this done? Or does the report need to be published and exist on the report server to use the data source?

Many Thanks,
Dean

It's just occurred to me, do most people create the shared data source locally and then just publish that to the report server?

If I recall well you're using BIDS (Visual Studio) for your report development.  In that case it's recommended to create a shared data source in your project.  Once you've got that created you can select the Use shared data source reference radio button on the Data Source properties (this is the data source in your report).  This allows you to select the shared data source from a dropdown list.

Hi Valentino,

Yes that's correct I am using Visual Studio. My problem being that I need this Data Source shared amongst various projects so as per one of your previous comments on another post i have setup a shared data source on the report server. I am now creating my first project on my local machine and wish to access the shared data source on the report server?

Thanks,
Dean.

You don't need to, nor can't, access the shared data source on the report server.  You need to create a shared data source in each of your projects, each pointing to wherever they need to point to.  This data source will only be used during development.  When you deploy your reports you need to ensure that the settings for the shared data source location are pointing to the actual location on the server.   Besides that location, make sure that the OverwriteDataSources setting is set to false.  This way BIDS will deploy your reports and connect them to the existing data source on the server.
