What is the best solution to upgrade Office 2010 Standard to Pro Plus using SCCM?

Hello
I am required to use SCCM to upgrade approx 1500 computers from Office 2010 Standard to Pro Plus.

Currently running SCCM 2012 R2 with the latest SP1

As I understand it is recommended to remove Standard completely before installing Pro Plus.

I initially created a package that removes Standard using the Microsoft FixIt tool, then installs Pro Plus, but the licenses fails to activate upon completion.  There is something in the FixIt Tool that prevents the license from activating after Pro Plus has been installed, even though the Auto-Activate switch is on.

Are there any suggestions on how best to complete this?  Would a task sequence of removing standard, then reboot, then installing pro plus, then reboot, work?

Thanks in advance

I miss using SCCM, Personally I would create a custom installer using Flexera Admin Studio.
This used to be called Wise Package Studio or Altiris Package Studio a really brilliant product for SCCM, you can use a free trial to do this and see how it works.

Basically you create a custom snapshot package on a PC that is of the exact same build as you use in your company.

You hit record snapshot, proceed to uninstall office 2010 and reinstall office 2010 pro plus activate it and then hit stop record, the program then creates a custom MSI for you that makes this a one click install.

Proceed to test this on a few workstations and deploy the job through SCCM.

Thanks for the advice.  Would this work with a reboot between the uninstall and install?  It's recommended by Microsoft

I cant answer 100% on that one, Im pretty sure it can though, you get free support when you use a trial from Flexera I would direct that one at them.

If you have not used this software before it is a must, I used to create a custom package for example that installed 5 different applications in a one click install. It is all registry level.

The software is smart enough to know what areas of the registry not to change and exclude from the software itself.

Also consider doing two jobs, 1 x uninstall , 1 x install new product.

After thinking about it a bit longer this software does support reboots.

I suggest you not to take snapshots when MSI are involved.

MS Office has many msi, most with custom actions in them.

I would suggest to remove and reinstall. That  is all.

How can I do that in SCCM?

Removal is done by this script/fixit tool.

Installation is also straightforward.  Of course there may be some reboots involved. Perhaps you can tell the users to leave the machine on and push removal tool at 5 PM and installation at 6 PM.'

I wonder what Flexera or Altiris support would say about that?

That is besides the fact I already provided the same solution alternatively.

It is pretty outlandish actually for a guy on a forum to claim such a reputable product that ive been using since SMS 2003 does not work with MSI, unbelievable really.

Also in regards to pushing removal tool at 5pm and install at 6pm, you would probably want to run some serious reporting to ensure that lal clients received the first package. the uninstall.

Further to this, if the OP uses a free trial of this he is entitled to use technical support during the trial.
Therefore he could actually ask Flexera if there product supports such an installation.

I used to work for a large large MNC and our lead admin for EMEA who I trust a lot more than you had us using SMS and SCCM in conjunction with snapshot packaging programs. No offence Nagbranda. Just the way it is unfortunately.

It may be easier for the user in this instance to use an uninstall / reinstall however he should be using packaging software, the whole point of this packaging software is to make custom MSI's and your saying it does not work with certain MSI's, not buying it tbh. Why do all vendors include custom install switches if that were the case?

Tony did you use Flexera for this for clarification?
