Cisco CSR 1000v Switch VMware Equivalent

Hello Experts,

If you're familiar with Cisco CSR 1000v's, can you let me know if there is an equivalent VMware Host for Cisco Switches?

Cheers

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

could you expand, on this and explain in more detail ?

what are you trying to do ?

Hi,

I currently host Cisco CSR 1000vs on my ESXi host for routing -  this obviates the need to run actual routers such as 2900's, 1900 etc. I was wondering if there is a virtual switch that has the capabilities as for example Cisco layer 2 switch?

There is. It's the Cisco Nexus 1000V switch. It runs a virtual NX-OS switch within your ESXi host.

Hi Jody,

Thanks for responding.

Does it have the same functions as, say 6500's?

Cheers
Jody LemoineNetwork ArchitectCommented:
The 6500 is a much bigger platform with a much wider feature set, so there are definitely going to be big differences. It's also in the Catalyst family where the Nexus 1000v is based on the Nexus family. Are any there specific functions you're looking to have available?

The Nexus 1000v is a layer 2 switch, relying on external hardware for layer 3 functionality, but as far as layer 2 networking is concerned, it's pretty full-featured.

Hi Jody

I'm building a virtual lab and I need a virtual switch that can function pretty much like a layer 3 switch. I don't want to down the gns3 path

Cheers
Jody LemoineNetwork ArchitectCommented:
Getting actual L3 switching on a virtual switch is going to be a bit of a challenge. I'm using Cisco's VIRL for my own lab (which I highly recommend, by the way) but am still using physical L3 switches to handle that aspect of it.

Hi Jody

What do you like about virl ?
Jody LemoineNetwork ArchitectCommented:
I like that it provides a lab environment for NX-OS, IOS (L2 Switch and Router), IOS-XE and IOS-XR in one environment for a reasonable price. Great for both proof-of-concept labs and learning.

Hi Jody

I hear what you're saying, but you're never going to get full NX-OS to the same extent as a Nexus 7K.

Having said that what I would love is a virtual Cisco layer 3 switch

But I guess that isn't avaialble yet?
Jody LemoineNetwork ArchitectCommented:
I never said you would. Then again, nobody needs the full functionality of a Nexus 7K in a VM.

L3 switching is just beyond the scope of most VM host switching requirements. You might find something in what they're doing with OpenStack, but that takes you outside of the ESXi world and well beyond the efforts most are willing to put into a networking lab configuration.
