it depends on what is th cause of the slowness
may are caused by virus or malware - others by bad disk sectors, etc..
in case of malware, run a n AV scan + these :
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php                         MBAM
http://majorgeeks.com/RogueKiller_d6983.html                  Roguekiller

for testing disk, i use the UBCD a lot
Hardware diagnostic CD    UBCD

go to the download page, scroll down to the mirror section, and  click on a mirror to start the download
Download the UBCD and make the cd   <<==on a WORKING PC, and boot the problem PC from it
Here 2 links, one to the general site, and a direct link to the download

since the downloaded file is an ISO file, eg ubcd527.iso - so you need to use an ISO burning tool
if you don't have that software, install cdburnerXP : http://cdburnerxp.se/

If you want also the Ram tested - run memtest86+ at least 1 full pass,  - you should have NO errors!

For disk Diagnostics run the disk diag for your disk brand (eg seagate diag for seagate drive)  from the HDD section -  long or advanced diag !  (runs at least for30 minutes)

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/                        ultimate boot cd
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html             download page

**  you can make a bootable cd - or bootable usb stick

for completeness -here's how i handle disk problems : https://www.experts-exchange.com/Storage/Hard_Drives/A_3000-The-bad-hard-disk-problem.html

***i never use ways to speed up PC's - in most cases they slow it down, and cause more problems than they fix

most weird thing i see hour glass kind of circle rotating whole night. System clock also struck not moving(still shows 10pm ysterday night). I will try some of the suggestions here if possible soon if my system allow me to.
i see hour glass kind of circle rotating whole night  <-- That is normally due to high disk usage. Open Resource Monitor and set to look at Disk. What is chewing up disk usage?

Open Resource Monitor and set to look at Disk

you mean control+alt+del then click 'Task Manager' and kill some processes?

I only know that much as of now. All these sugestions i need to experiment.
No, I meant go to Resource Monitor (Admin Tools). You can let Resource Monitor run and it will graph disk (and CPU) over time.
Here is Resource Monitor (Admin Tools)

did you check for malware?
if virus free,  running sfc can help :

CCleaner I mentioned above can be found at (https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner) use the free version

i installed and analyzed saw 9243 mb worth of files. now cleaning them.

when i open the windows explorer (windows key+E)it is closing by itself in few seconds saying 'windows enountered a problem..windows trying to find solution etc) not sure why.

How to see every folder with its sized next to it. I see some folder sizes being shown and some do not. please advise
Try Tree Size Pro (Jam Software). Download a trial, run it as Administrator and it should show you everything.

So also will Total Commander.
cleaning out files won't speed up the pc...
did you try our suggestions?

this link is not clear to me . what to install and how to remove malware if in case my current
Mcaffee did not detect?
You do not have to download SFC. This is a repair tool and will not remove any viruses or malware. The suggestion was to run SFC if the computer appeared to be free of viruses.

To run System File Checker:

Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator and run SFC /SCANNOW.
Allow to complete, restart or, preferably, shut down the computer and then start up again.
Test to see if anything has changed.
i don't understand what you find not clear on the SFC page i linked to
it shows how to run the sfc command from a DOS box

You must be an administrator running a console session in order to
use the sfc utility.

C:\Users\ganesha>

i am getting above error.
How i give cmd.exe as administrator then SFC /SCANNOW ommand ?
please advise
Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator and then run SFC in the command box. As long as you open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator, SFC will work.

How to open cmd.exe with run as administrator. Can you please provide some screenshots to do that
Click on Start, type in cmd and you should see cmd.exe come up in the menu above. Right click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator.

Alternately go to c:\windows\system32 and right click on cmd.exe in system32. Select Run as Administrator.

i ran that command.

it says

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

C:\Windows\system32>SFC/SCANNOW

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

C:\Windows\system32>

i do see some log kind of files. i am not able to open them. please advise
Regular files do not slow a computer down. An excessive number of temporary files will slow down regular operation. I mentioned before to run Disk Cleanup for that.

However I find it strange that Explorer and Total Commander won't show you files. That suggests something else is wrong with the computer.
Trying to interpret logs from SFC is usually not helpful. I just run SFC a second time.

i feel now browser is fast and better response overall. I still see my windows explorer still closing and starting abruptly as below.

please advise

SFC is not designed to remove malware, just repair system problems.

The next step (this is Windows 8 according to the first post) is to run DISM.

Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator (same as for SFC)
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth (takes 15 - 20 minutes).
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth (takes 15 - 20 minutes).
Restart the computer and test.

i ran both. For second got errors 87 etc as attached

Thank you for following up .

Unfortunately now, the best answer is to back up your data, format and reinstall Windows 8.

Oh
how much ram do you have? for windows 7, you need 4 GB at least
another way to speed up your laptop, is installing an SSD -  imo the best investment you can make
Avatar of gudii9

i have 8gb i think. I will double check.

what causes windows browser to shut down. For that issue I wonder why i have to reimage whole operating system.  it is a big process to back up data and wipe out all and reimage by finding the CDs etc
Operating system errors cause the browser error but DISM cannot repair in this case.
