HP OfficeJet Pro 8500

Say, I am trying to use the printer just as a scanner without the printing function which is no longer operating due to this broken gear. See question, https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/28596391/HP-Printer-OfficeJet-Pro-8500-Paper-Jam-error.html
it's not economical to replace the gear - how can I override its functioning and make the printer think that the gear is working? In the current none of the functionality of the printer will work.
Thanks
Shaun

Surely one can loosen something or cover a sensor - its such a pity and waste - a small gear is disabling the entire device....
There isn't a sensor to cover, gears are moving parts and the unit is checking to make sure things are spinning properly.  If the proper spinning doesn't happen the diagnostics won't pass and the printer won't be operational.

You need to either replace the gear or the printer.

You can try to get in and disable things that look like sensors, but you'll most likely be wasting your time.  Small printers like that aren't really made to be fixed, they are disposable.
The other issue with that printer is the Printer Head. There are two and they are very expensive when they need replacing (that happened to me). So it is more reasonable to cut your losses now and replace.
you can try to find a broken one, and take the gear from it to replace it on yours
i actually fixed a loose gear on an hp printer - but it's not easy
Tx -the challenge is getting to the gear - a huge job. Part of the gear is still in place.....
Don't want printing function - only scanning function... Such a  waste
Disconnect power, press and hold 6 and # plug power back in t(his is a reset cmd) and in some cases when the self test starts after the reset and it fails it enables some printer functions as fax and copy.

This is just something you can try and not a guarantee.. I also agree with all the comments above replacing the printer sometimes is best.

Hope to try
did the above solution help?
I still need to try it
then i don't understand why you accepted it??
if you want , you can reopen the Q - and wait till you know the result
just use Request attention, and ask a mod for help !
Kindly give an extension as not been able to test as yet
ok - waiting for result
sorry had power issues.. still not been able.
no problem - take your time
I tried the reset - afraid issue persists - such a waste -  a small gear and whole device unuseable...
Have you tried sourcing the part from a spares channel partner?

DirkMare
Unusable device means replacing the printer is the best way forward.
look on ebay if you cna find a broken printer of the same model, to use for parts

Why do you say its uneconomical?

In most cases gears are not more then a couple of dollars? What is the exact model of the printer?

The first two answers are correct.

I agree with John and I think a fair resolution would be an equal division of points.
