Type-Ahead versus Auto-Complete?

Do these mean the same thing?

Is one of the a Microsoft term?

Is there a concrete definition of either? And if they are different, then I need a definition of them both.

Thanks.

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

They're the same thing.
Don't know who invented which but it doesn't really matter.

For instance, jquery Ui guys call it autocomplete, twitter guys call it typeahead... Eh! :-)

I was still trying to find a reason for that difference and it might actually be an historical one :)

At the beginning, autocomplete controls were "just" showing the available options in a dropdown, and updating them as you were writing.
After that, a new "behavior" lets say was added to that, you could actually also see in a lighter color the proposed text in front of your blinking cursor.

So the first is an autocomplete, the second is a typeahead just because it actually writes in the textbox ahead of you (but still has the dropdown) :)

It's the only justification I can find...
