whatsapp for ipod

My mother has an old ipod touch  I know that whatsapp only works with a phone number but is there a way round this or has anyone heard anything about whatsapp introducing an email address as the account ID instead of a phone number?

Also why is it that when making a phone call on either skype or whatsapp, it sounds like it is ringing when you call someone but they never get a calling ring?

Hi,  I have set up whatsapp on ipods. I just used a temp phone number from a sim card to set it up. After that it worked.  Does your mum have a cell phone? just use that number.  It does not matter that the actual device is not able to use the phone number.

Also why is it that when making a phone call on either skype or whatsapp, it sounds like it is ringing when you call someone but they never get a calling ring?
The sounds you here these days in the IP world of telephony is a "fake" tone to indicate something is happening.  Think of it as a circle spinning on your screen.  It the old days it indicated that the other phone was in face ringing.

But whatsapp is not even showing in the IOS store for the ipod?
I am sorry for my comment then. It was a while ago that I did it, like 2 years (or when it was a one time purchase price). If it is not available in the store then that is almost the end of the story.

It would be my assumption that not only will it be difficult to get the app installed but maybe the app itself checks on which device it is running.

A jailbroken ipod would avoid the itunes store problem most likely (I cannot say if it avoids the second). It is free for the first year anyway and then you will need to pay a subscription irrespective of where you get it from.

By the way I installed whatsApp (android version) on a tablet and used a normal telephone number to register. So it did not need a cell phone number.  Of course I know this is not iDevices, not Apple software and was done in Europe but there is a chance it works for you.
