Before you can install or remove Active Directory, you must remove Certificate Services

Hello All,

I am finishing up a migration from SBS 2008 to Server 2012 Standard with Exchange 2013. I have turned off the sbs 2008 for a week and everything is working properly just running the new server. I uninstalled exchange 2013 and performed a DCPROMO to demote it and format the server. The old server is to be sold to my clients friend.  When I try to do a demote the server I get "Before you can install or remove Active Directory , you must remove Active Directory Certificate Services. I will mentioned that the servers worked in coexistence for a month or so.  I started to follow a thread on how to move the CA to the new server but got stuck on having both servers be named the same. Can anyone give me a hand? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/298138

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

you don't need to have the servers with the same name
when you export the registry key, there are values you need to change to match the destination server name before you import on the new server.  there are also objects in AD sites and services that need modifying when moving to a different server name.

i've used this migration guide in the past when i migrated a CA to a new server and worked well
