How to back up SQL 2012 that is running in a VM

Physical server is a Windows 2012 server non-R2 running Hyper-V. I have a Windows 2012 non-R2 guest running SQL 2012. Would it be recommended to protect SQL 2012 using the Hyper-V component of Windows Server Backup run from the Host?

we have an SQL server.
We has a NAS LUN provisioned for it which is passed to the Virtual Machine and then use Windows server Backup to do a backup of it.

A second layer we have to backup the whole SQL VM using host's backup software.

for SQL Database backups, you can use SQL Maintenance Plans

Which edition of sql server you are using?
1. You can create inbuild Maintenance plan in SQL server 2012 Enterprise edition \ Standard Edition.
2. You can create SQL server agent job with Tsql backup script task and schedule at any time.

In case edition is Express. you can not create Maintenance plan \ SQL agent job ,
you have to save the Tsql script in .sql file
create a bat file which will call to SQLCMD to execute this script.
Schedule the bat file using Windows task manager.

Thank you for your comments. I would like to use only the Host backup of the VM if that would be a reliable way to backup SQL 2012 Standard.

What I am seeing is for reliable backups of the SQL DB we must run a backup from within the VM. Is this the case? Thank you for your thoughts.

SQL DBs should be backed up on daily basis via SQL Native method or any third party tool like Symentec Backup exec.

I would suggest, you should go with SQL native backup especially for SQL databases.
