Need to install four HP M6412

Dear Experts,
I need to configure four HP M6412 as one unit with different servers using switch.

I have already done physical connectivity but I need to know how to do software part e.g configuring Raid and creating LUNs etc

I don't have any EVA hardware only four M6412.

Thanks and Regards
Zaheer Ahmad

Dear David Johnson,

Thanks for your response, but I don't have any EVA Storage, I only have four M6412.

Can I Configure these without EVA?

you need a controller in addition to the disk enclosures

I've connected M5314s directly to HBAs before so it should be possible with the newer enclosures too. Note that I only do this to test them, it's not something I would do in a production environment.

You can't create LUNs though since in this scenario you will just see each raw disk as a LUN. Assuming you do see them all you have to do is set up software RAID on them and we can't help with that as you don't say what operating system is on the server.

You say servers rather than server though, you don't have an EVA controller to set up LUN masking on so you will have to be careful to avoid two servers seeing the same disk, you can use zoning by WWN on the SAN switch to do that. You may also be using dual paths as the enclosures have two ports so the OS's native multipathing may be required to avoid seeing each disk twice.

To make an EVA4400 you will need a pair of HSV300s AG637A plus CommandView EVA license. (Without CV-EVA installed and licensed you can't create LUNs, also if the cache batteries are dead the LUNs won't be presented to the hosts for data security reasons.)

Can't see CV-EVA license on eBay (T5497B), and you won't like the new price. May be worth asking whoever you bought the enclosures off whether they have the DL380 with CommandView on it as the license is worth more than the server it's installed on.

Unlimited CV-EVA licence T5497B is about €10,000 new. Found some 1TB capacity licenses at http://www.cart100.com/Product/40836087378/ for a very low price though. (new 1TB licenses are over €1,000 each, nobody uses them any more they are a hangover from when disks were a few GB each.

Dear andyalder,

thanks for the information, will EVA 4400 will work with M6412-A storage disks or I have to go for EVA 6000?

12 disk shelves aren't supported on EVA6000, needs to be newer EVA x400, i.e. 4400. 6400, 8400.
