Hibernate entity returned as JSON results in loop

Hi,

I'm working on a simple API to help me learn how to build API's in Java. I'm using Jersey and Hibernate JPA.

I have a database with two simple tables, Projects and Clients. Each client can have multiple projects, and each project has a single client.

I'm getting a client from the database and trying to return that client and it's projects as JSON, however what seems to be happening is that when the object is converted to JSON, it's returning the project, then the project client, and inside the project client it's listing projects, and the whole loop starts again.

I understand what's happening, but I don't know how to stop it, as it's being converted to JSON the getProjects() method is being called on Clients, and then on each client the getProjects() method is being called which is resulting in the loop.

Here's the really simple method i'm using;

@GET
	@Produces("application/json")
	public Response get() {
		HashMap response = new HashMap();
		response.put("client", this.clientRepo.get(1));

		return Response.status(200).entity(response).build();
	}

Open in new window

I won't post the code for the Client and Project classes, as they've been automatically generated by the JPA.

I've resolved this issue by using adding annotations to the entities.
