Create Site Wide Search of Intranet

Hello,
Have been tasked with finding a search for the intranet. We use ASP.Net 4.0 & SQL 2008 R2 system.

Looked briefly at Google Search Appliance.  Haven't contacted them on the cost yet.  My company probably won't want to put out a lot of money.

Here's a little  more info:

It's the Intranet - so search would be on IIS 7, .Net 4.0.  Search through web pages (.aspx), SQL server tables, and Documents (pdf, .docx, .xlsx, pptx).  I would also have to restrict some areas out of the search.  (Like Search all folders under the "Documents" folder except for the "Contracts" folder.)

I saw something about Microsoft Search Server 2010.  Any opinions welcomed.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Not an uncommon requirement but not one I have had personal responsibility for.

I have seen a quite few corporations use Coveo
see: http://www.coveo.com/en/resources/ebooks-white-papers/Gartner-Magic-Quadrant-for-Enterprise-Search

There are alternatives, apply for the Gartner "Magic Quadrant" which lists:

Leaders
Coveo
HP Autonomy
Google
Perceptive Software

Challengers
Mindbreeze

Visionaries
Attivo
Sinqua
BA Insight
Dassault Systemes

Niche Players

One was
(e.g. Vivisimo (http://Vivisimo.com), but I haven't seen it in a long time, appears to be an IBM product now "IBM Watson")

& another list of possible alternatives (I have not vetted these)

small update.

Vivisimo used to take keywords from content to dynamically present data into categories or "clusters" and they used to run a site called clusty.com to demonstrate its product.

If you now attempt to access http://clusty.com it redirects to http://yippy.com which appears to be the same or similar product.

see http://yippyinc.com for details of that product

IBM Watson does not appear to have a live demo accessible through the web (well, I didn't see it)

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your suggestions.

Been looking at the list.  Can you recommend one that is easier to use?  I've never done this before and looks pretty complicated.  Also maybe something a little less costly?  Many of them start at $8,000 a year.
Sorry to be a pain....   SharePoint Fast Search server is rated pretty good, have you ever used that one?  We have sharepoint - old Moss version.  Would the Search server include all the queries to pull info on?

Gave me a bunch of vendors to start with.  Most of them pricey.  But this link has helped.
