Sharepoint migration

Hi, I'm trying to create a test environment for Sharepoint by copying the current server, renaming it, copy the SQL databases and create new ones from those copies. How would I go about re-pointing those databases to the new server and is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks!

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You have to do a fresh install of SharePoint because it will save you time and frustration trying to get an existing name of a SharePoint server working under a new test server name.
Setup Test Environment SQL Server and then Install SharePoint onto Test Environment SharePoint Server
Backup all SharePoint Content Databases from Production that have website content not configuration databases and not the Central Admin content database
Restore Content Database Backups onto new test SQL Server instance
Create SharePoint Web Application in the SharePoint Test Environment that matches your SharePoint Production Site except with a test environment name and detach the content database once finished Dismount-SPContentDatabase WSS_Content_SharePointSite
Powershell to attach content databases that were restored: Mount-SPContentDatabase -Name WSS_Content_SharePoint_Site -WebApplication "http://SharePointSite"
Configure your Test SharePoint Site similar to production (User Profile Sync, SQL Reporting Services [pointing to test environment], etc.)
