Alternatives to Netapp Snap Mirror for Exchange/SQL,/VMI ?

We've been using SMVI/SME/SMSQL for for so long - I don't know what else out there that's comparable. As I'm looking at different storage options (Pure, Nimble, EMC as well as Netapp), what products would let me replicate the easy backup/restore solution if we went away from Netapp? And any cost information would be helpful too. Thanks.

First off are these servers physical or virtual ?

If they are virtual you could use something like Zerto for VM level replication and they have built in failover and failback functions too. I think pricing on Zerto is in the 745$ per VM range, with a minimum of 15 VM's to start with. From there you can scale by single VM licenses.

Also on the virtual side of EMC's Recoverpoint for VM's (which again is VMware based) so you can replication to / from any storage. Very Similar to Zerto here, although there is a free version but it doesnt come with support....

On the physical side you have EMC Recoverpoint ... which is pretty pricey but does do a nice job

I believe DoubleTake also makes some software for physical machines as well... but I have never used it.

NetApp has a considerable stable software stack, which they have been working on for yerars, to support Exchange, SQL and VMware vSphere, this is one of NetApp many strengths.

If you require those tools.

@justin Yes - we're VMWare on Cisco UCS on Netapp currently. The VM's use NFS to talk with the filers.

Do you currently use Snapshots/Snapmirror as forms of replication or not ?

What do you use for Backup - Snap Manager Applications ?

@Andrew we use snapshots/snap mirrors and we use app specific SMSQL, SMVI, SME. All of it's worked well and will play a part in the decision making process. The feature sets that the other storage vendors are coming out with deserve a look too as technology marches on.

@amigan_99 I would say that as you look at storage vendors ask them what they recommend.

If you want to stay NFS this next bit may not be a big deal, but if you are going to go block level then take note:

as vvols become more widely used and people start ot design their vmware environments for them things like snapshots and cloning operate at the san level, therefore you should check to see whether having those features (snapshoting and cloning, etc) are included or if they cost extra... at EMC they cost extra (that is just the brand im most famliar  with).

With that said i think you are really asking two questions here.

What great backup products are there out there?

What great DR / replication products are there out there ?

Definetly two different questions, and many solutions for each (some of which do both).... lots of research in your future I would bet :)

- nothing yet! If you take the whole product NetApp and Software Bundle, and it's taken NetApp many years to develop and provide that software Bundle. Many years ago (circa 2004), you had to purchase each app, e.g. Snap Manager for Windows, Exchange, SQL...

NetApp had a re-think, and offered them all with bundle deals.

NetApp are ahead of the game with these products, however Tegile are starting to develop similar products.

SAN to SAN (Snapmirror) replication cannot be beaten, so many VM side applications cause VMware VM Snapshot issues.
