Have you tried a Treeview instead?

no
i have tried a number of third party listviews and they are very restrictive and difficult to code for in the way i want to use them.

i need to create a listview with 8 colomns and 3 oth the columns or subitem need to be check boxes that can be either checked through the program or by the user
then the state of the checkbox is call to determine the outcome

Would be easier to use a grid then. I personally use the one of Telerik: http://www.telerik.com/help/winforms/gridview-columns-gridviewcheckboxcolumn.html
