Hyper-V Convert from VHD to VHDX

I see the Powershell command to convert a vhd to vhdx....

PS C:\> Convert-VHD –Path c:\test\testvhd.vhd –DestinationPath c:\test\testvhdx.vhdx

My question is... If I currently have a Hyper-V VM running as a VHD on an IDE bus...... After I convert the file to VHDX can I recreate the VM using SCSI bus and attached the newly converted VHDX?

Will that work?  The goal is to convert the disk to vhdx, and then use the converted disk to create a new GENERATION 2 VM with a SCSI controller instead of IDE?

Back up the VM first.

After shutting it down and running the conversion: In Hyper-V Management open the VM's settings.

Select the IDE bus the VHD was on, select the VHD, click the Browse button, select the newly created VHDX file, APPLY and OK.

Start the VM.

You may get a ChkDsk when starting the VM. Let it run through.

All _should_ be okay.

But wouldnt that leave the new vhdx on the IDE controller?

I want to switch it to SCSI....

Gen1 VMs the SCSI bus is not bootable.

Needs to be Gen2 which means only 2012 R2 and Win8.1 and up for guest OS.

Right, so what if the guest OS is Server 2012, but the original VM was created GEN 1.  My goal is to upgrade somehow to GEN 2.
