apt-get stops working on both Debian 8 and Ubuntu server 14 LTS installed on vmware workstation 11

I installed Debian Jessie on VMware Workstation 11.0.0 build-2305329. Shortly after install (a few days) aptitude stops working, but network is up and all other services continue to work. I can SSH to the server, I can view web pages hosted on the server and I can ping any address that is ping-able, even the Debian repository it is trying to connect too.

I also have installed Ubuntu Server 14.04.2 LTS just today. I was able to use aptitude initially to install and update Ubuntu, I was even able to install solr-tomcat from apt-get. Now same problem, IP4 stack is working but apt-get hangs like seen in the code snippet.
After this operation, 141 MB of additional disk space will be used.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Did you try following:

in /etc/gai.conf uncomment "precedence ::ffff:0:0/96 100", save the file...

Try the apt-get again...

gain you once SSHed into the server access external resources?
traceroute 8.8.8.8
not sure from where you make these connections, but when you try to initiate external access the traffic might be blocked/not allowed out.

I am the network engineer so i know it is not a networking issue. Like i said, everything works, ping traceroute sftp and ssh all work.

Another thing to try:

cd /var/cache/apt
rm pkgcache.bin srcpkgcache.bin
